TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY

'13 Reasons Why' is a MUST SEE as it depicts an unravelling of sorts that causes the lead- Hannah, into taking her life.  Its genius is that it gives credence to what causes the unraveling and gives a 'by example' type of what to look out for and a 'what-not-to do.'

Schools should embrace this 'taboo' issue and embrace it rather than reject it.  How often are schools afforded an opportunity to address this pandemic?  How often are we afforded an opportunity to create this 'type' of dialogue?

Why not use 'this' opportunity to promote awareness, understanding, compassion and humanity?

Netflix/ Selena Gomez is NOT glamorizing suicide, and shame on those in their self-proclaimed ignorance.

It's our opinion, attributed by our 20+ years of expert/professional experience on such issues, that schools that oppose '13 Reasons Why' are in fact irresponsible and are doing their students a grave disservice.

'EVERY1 complicit,
should be held accountable

'You were the beginning of the end.'

Thirteen Reasons Why /TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY, is a novel written by Jay Asher.  The book is also the basis of the television series TH1RTEEN R3A5ONS WHY.

The Importance here and the reason for this entire web-page is to help those at risk.  Unfortunately, due to today's pandemic of bullying and the ever-increasing cyber-bullying, OUR CHILDREN are no longer safe.

Below you will find excerpts found on-line that narrate 13 + Reasons why- hence the name of the book.  Directly to its right is an example of true life that is actually transpiring as we speak.  It gives an example in real life as a means to define that bullying is not just a children's issue, but an everyone's issue!  And in doing so, we can also identify the 'point of impact.'   Meaning, these killing 'traits' are learned, and we are all complicit by the carnage in its wake.

I'm an adult, so my life is not at risk...  I cannot imagine why after all thas been taken away, but I'm not.  Instead of finding ways to seek revenge as Hannah- the main character does, I'm sought out to understand and in doing so have uncovered why someone with so much could do so much harm.  A child-hood friend of Ms. Shields' and a former co-star had come to my aid and shed some light on behalf of Ms. Shields' behavior and it makes me sad.  Actually, all one need do is google child of an alcoholic and suddenly she all makes sense.  You combine the 50years of her being bought and sold, you can also understand her feeling like she's a commodity and not a person.  Add a list of close to 3000 people that cause her concern (most imagined...... ) and you can also understand her self professed mental illness of hypervigiliance.

So, I offer myself as example once again.  It may seem to be self serving, but we are taught that when we are shown adversity, we are then measured by our actions.  For example, I was offered a slap on the wrist if I pled guilty of a disorderly conduct.  If I plead guilty to harassment, I'd have no record of stalking but, then I'd have to lie.   Our very judicial system asked me to perjure myself to get away with a crime I hadn't committed.  In hind-sight I should have committed a crime as they advised- begged even for almost 2years, but then I'd be an actual criminal.   What kind of man would I have been an example to my little boy?  Ultimately my little boy came first and I took the best advice I'd been given..  Do not plead guilty if you are inj fact not guilty.  So, I didn't...

To anyone at risk, do not let another person destroy you.  If you need help, ask.  There is always help should you only ask.  That said, sometimes the world takes away too much and you will have to seek peace at any cost.  It doesn't mean that you are crazy nor that you are selfish.  Your life is your own and is designed to take only so much.

'may you find your own peace in any way.    And should you find yourself in need of assistance or are scared call 911 or your local crisis line- hell, you can even call me if you'd like.  BUT, just remember I'm just a guy myself...  but I will help anyone at anytime who's been hurt without question.  All I ask is that you pay it forward in your own act of kindness.  Imagine......  of course I have no ultimatums..  and am here....  as are many.

TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY

Clay Jensen, a shy high school student who on this one fateful day, returns home from school to find a mysterious package in his post. Upon opening the box, Clay finds seven double-sided cassette-tapes which had been pre-recorded and sent by Hannah Baker, a classmate Clay had pined over for years and who has recently committed suicide.

As the story unfolds, it's also an unraveling of sorts and has all the makings of a 'what to do, and a what not-to do' for kid's today, and their having to face/live with the ever-increasing bullying pandemic- a devastating problem that is defining our kid's generation and leaving mass-devastation in it's wake. Hannah's wishes are overseen by the ultimate bi-partisan, no pun intended..., and the tapes we come to find go from person to person, 'you were the beginning of the end.'

Off-Record, the human spirit is fragile and children are simply ill-equipped to handle situations that today's life presents. Given the life inexperience, and societal demands it's no wonder why kids today are suffering as much as they do. Our kid's needs are simply not being met, and until their needs are satiated, we should expect similar outcomes.

  • It's a tough read, and now an even tougher view. But, I defy anyone who gives it's excuse.
  • IF we are ever to give our kid's generation a fighting chance, Th1rteen R3asons Why is a must see and a have-to-do.

Each tape details why Hannah had taken her life and is a clear demonstration of cause and effect and how every action causes a re-action, thus each tapes make the other an accomplice of sorts in a tragedy that shatters an entire community.

  1. The first person to receive the tapes was Justin. They had only kissed once, but Justin told his friends that they did a lot more.... 'while some boys will be boys, Justin's exaggerations had sullen Hannah's reputation and made her the class target.
  2. The second person to receive them was Alex. Alex published a "hot or not" list comparing the girls in their class, and listed Hannah in an attempt to smite a recent ex of his. He awarded Hannah the title of 'Best Ass', which only escalated her reputation as being 'easy.' while awarding his ex-girlfriend Jessica the title of Worst Ass for her not having sex with him.
  3. The third person was Jessica. After being compare to Hannah on the "hot or not" list, Jessica slapped Hannah which ended their friendship, accusing Hannah of breaking the 'friendship' code. Jess' slap across Hannah's forehead left more than a bruise, it scared.
  4. The fourth person was Tyler, a classmate who worked as a photographer for the yearbook. After suspecting that Tyler was taking pictures of her through her bedroom window, Hannah enlisted their classmate Courtney to help her catch Tyler in the act.
  5. The fifth person was Courtney, who Hannah wanted to be friends with, although Tyler had photographed Courtney kissing Hannah. This led to more rumors although Courtney's fueled her own agenda, Courtney allowed more sordid rumors to be spred.
  6. The sixth person was Marcus, who believed the rumors about Hannah and tried to take advantage of her being easy. His crime was humiliation in a very public way.
  7. The seventh person was Zach, who tried to comfort Hannah after Marcus' humiliation. Although he was acting on a dare he genuinely offered some compassion. After Hannah doesn't respond to his advances, his scorn causes him to seek retribution and takes notes of encouragement from her as revenge.
  8. The eighth person is Ryan. After gaining her trust, Ryan stole a poem written by Hannah in which she detailed her personal problems. He published the poem anonymously in the school newspaper, but some of their classmates realized Hannah was the author and mocked her as a result. Hannah blamed Ryan for making her feel like even her thoughts are not safe from scrutiny.
  9. The ninth person to receive the tapes was Clay. Hannah apologizes for including Clay, as he was the only one not complicit. In his tape, Hannah admits that Clay was the nicest person she had ever met and that she wishes they had had more time to get to know each other. Clay, while at a party, connected with Hannah and later made out with her. During which Hannah was reminded of Justin's betrayal panicked while engaging with Clay and screams for Clay to leave the room which regrettably he does. While listening to the tapes, Clay along with all those complicit walks around town as advised by Hannah to all the places listed by Hannah to give an exact account and to provide a proper narrative of her demise.
  10. The tenth tape is Justin again. After Hannah forces Clay to leave after her becoming upset after their long awaited first kiss, Hannah was too upset and thus unable to leave the room. After hearing someone trying to enter, Hannah then hides in the closet and is forced to witness a classmate being raped. Justin knew about the rape and let it happen.
  11. The eleventh tape is Jenny, a cheerleader who offered Hannah a ride home from the house party. She hit a stop sign while driving and did not tell the police, leading to a car accident which killed one of their classmates.
  12. The twelfth person was Bryce, who we come to find was the one who raped Jessica and then an unsuspecting Hannah.
  13. The thirteenth was Mr. Porter, the school counselor. Hannah secretly recorded a conversation they had, in which she expressed a desire to kill herself. Overwhelmed, Mr. Porter simply told Hannah that if she was unwilling to press charges against Bryce, she should just try to move on.
Upon the story coming to a close, we see Clay bravely going-on. We see a braver Clay, and imagine him to be a wiser Clay even... He's seen running into a classmate of his named Skye. Prior to the loss of Hannah, we had only seen glimpses of Sky and it gave an unspoken glimpse of her struggles that suggests her own isolation... We're not sure of the outcome but the audience is taught to appreciate that all people are deserving and some-times people who hurt literally wear their hurt and the Th1rteen r3asons Why, now becomes the Th1rteen Si3ns.

The novel ends with Clay reaching out to Skye....

NO ONE just decides to just kill themselves...it's a slowly devolving loss of human spirit. AND any and everyone's misuse of another has complicity in one's demise.... It's also important to understand that suicide does not equate to mental illness. 'sometimes enough IS enough.

It takes a strong soul to live broken..... That said, the broken do not want to remain broken and will try almost anything before arriving to their finality. We as a community must recognize that in addition to the 13 Reasons Why, there are more than 13 Signs.....

THEM

US

Tape 1/JUSTIN.

Picture
The first person to receive the tapes was Justin.  They had only kissed once, but Justin told his friends that they did a lot more.... 'while boys will be boys, Justin's exaggerations had sullen Hannah's reputation and his lies made her the class slut and placed the target on her back that would prove fatal.....

Tape 2/ Alex.

Picture

The second person to receive the tapes was Alex.  Alex spitefully published a "hot or not" list comparing the girls in their class, and listed Hannah in an attempt to smite a recent ex of his. He awarded Hannah the title of 'Best Ass', which only escalated her reputation as being 'easy,'  while he awarded his ex-girlfriend Jessica the title of Worst Ass for her not having sex with him.

In Alex's malice he not only ruined a 'BFF' forever pact, but pitted the girls against each other.  This was devastating to Hannah as the two were the class' newest members and were each other's only real friends.  While Jessica moved onto being accepted into the popular click, Hannah was left alone and felt abandoned and betrayed.

Tape 3/ Jessica.

Picture
The third person was Jessica.   Jessica and Hannah were the new kids on the block and neither one had been in town long enough to had many any friends and a friendship was essentially forced upon them by a well intended school advisor.  It wasn't long before a real friendship emerged and had formed a full bond complete with their own acronyms.  Unfortunately it was only brief.  After being compared to Hannah on the "hot or not" list, Jessica became suspicious of her 'friend' and in a jealous fit of rage slapped Hannah across the face.  This of course ended their one time close friendship believing that Hannah broke  the 'friendship' code.

Jess' slap across Hannah's forehead left more than a bruise, it scared.

There's  nothing worse than being accused for something someone didn't do.  And when you lose someone in the process, you feel abandoned and alone.....

Tape 4/ Tyler.

Picture
The fourth person was Tyler, a classmate who worked as a photographer for the yearbook. After suspecting that someone had been 'stalking' her, Hannah enlisted her classmate Courtney to help catch the would-be predator in the act.

Upon the success of catching the criminal, Hannah was horrified to learn that Tyler had been 'photographing' her in compromising while still innocent, positions.

What led Hannah to add Tyler on her 'Reasons' list was based on his stalking behavior that left Hannah feeling like a prisoner in her own home.  He violated her in ways that any victim would feel.

So, she too played him at his own game thus causing Tyler to create yet another scandal which involved Courtney and exposed a secret Courtney would 'kill' to keep..

Tape 5/ Courtney.

Picture
The fifth person was Courtney, who Hannah wanted to be friends with, after she had a falling out with and lost her BFF Jessica.  Things were on their way to a solid friendship until their scheme to expose StalkerTyler exposed more than they had bargained for.  Tyler photographed Courtney kissing Hannah which fueled more rumors.  To deflect and hide Courtney's bigger secret, Courtney inflamed the rumors surrounding the kiss and concocted her own narrative that added fuel to the already burning fire of Hannah being the town whore.

Hannah was anything but.

Tape 6/ Marcus.

Picture
The sixth person was Marcus, who believed the rumors about Hannah and tried to take advantage of her as a result.  It wasn't that he just tried, he humiliated Hannah in public.  It proved to Hannah her biggest fears..  that she was a joke.

Tape 7/ Zach.

Picture
The seventh person was Zach, who tried to comfort Hannah after Marcus humiliated her publicly based solely on a dare.   Though Zach genuinely liked Hannah, Hannah rejects his friendliness believing it to be disingenous.  Out of spite or revenge from his rejection, Zach takes notes of out of 'the encouragement' bags that just so happened were Hannah's only connection to anyone in school.

Losing these notes crushed Hannah to the point where it took with it  her spirit.

'WHY ME ZACH, WHY ME?????

Tape 8/ Ryan.

Picture
The eighth person is Ryan.   After gaining her trust, Ryan stole a poem written by Hannah in which she detailed her personal problems.  With her objection and knowing her need of privacy, Ryan published the poem anonymously in the school newspaper but some of their classmates realized Hannah had been the one to write it and mocked her.

Hannah blamed Ryan for making her feel like even her thoughts are not safe from scrutiny.

Tape 9/ Clay.

Picture

Tape 10.

Picture
The tenth tape is Justin again. After Hannah forces Clay to leave after her becoming upset after their long awaited first kiss, Hannah was too upset and thus unable to leave the room. After hearing someone trying to enter, Hannah then hides in the closet and is forced to witness a classmate being raped. Justin knew about the rape and let it happen.

Tape 11.

Picture
The eleventh tape is Jenny, a cheerleader who offered Hannah a ride home from the house party. She hit a stop sign while driving and did not tell the police, leading to a car accident which killed one of their classmates.

A classmate had been killed and Hannah did nothing to prevent it which she took very hard and quite personally.  Feeling guilty is one of the worst emotions and wreaks havoc enough on its own, let alone in addition to....

Tape 12/ Bryce.

Picture
The twelfth person was Bryce, who we come to find was the one who raped Jessica and then an unsuspecting Hannah.

Tape 13/ Mr. Porter.

Picture
The thirteenth was Mr. Porter, the school counselor.  Hannah secretly recorded a conversation they had, in which she expressed a desire to kill herself. This was Hannah's last cry for help and she was hoping for a literal lifeline which did not come.

Being too busy with his own affairs, and overwhelmed as a result, Mr. Porter failed his only real duty.  He simply told Hannah that she should just try to move on.  It's easy to give the advice, never easy to take it..

This is a place I want to give extra attention to.  The signs are there- the signs are always there.  You just have to be present to see them, and you have to care enough.

No one just goes and kills themselves.  No-one.  Suicide is a long string of events and each one comes with great hesitation...  More importantly, it's used as a last resort.  AND too often we fail.

When it happens, don't be dismissive.  You knew.....  we have been telling you........  AGAIN, I'm an adult and I'm not defined by some sociopath- no matter how beautiful she is.   At the same time, I still believe in justice.  Whether it comes from our representatives or not- we all know inside what is true and sometime it's all one needs.   We just have to live courageously.

YOU HEAR THAT KIDS...  it may seem bleak, but know whatever issue you may have, live with courage, and when you can't- you can't.  It's ok.  It's all ok.

BONUS.

1/ MICHAEL LEVINE.

Picture
The First person on my list was Michael Levine- he was the beginning of my end.  On all accounts, Michael was a horrible, horrible man who out of spite wrote a rather disturbing sequence of falsified reports that was meant to create havoc in my business and personal life.

The reports were for all the world to see and depicted me as the worst possible monster there ever was.  In my attempt to 'control' the damage I contacted the NYPD Cyber-Crimes Unit, and the NYPD Police Commissioner's office for support.  It was there that we were then able to control the extortion site's narrative.  We had gotten Michael to recant his reports, but gained his admittance of such a heinous act.

2. Brooke Shields

Picture
The second person named on my 'list' was Brooke.  Brooke on all accounts was the most beautiful thing this then 12 year old boy had ever seen.  It wasn't sexual by any means it was the illusion of her.  She seemed as kind as she was beautiful.  After her Brooke Shields & Co sought revenue by soliciting fans and people to join their 'fan' club for a mere $25.99, I fell prey.

Brooke is hardly kind, nor sweet.  On May of 2015 she filed a complaint out of spite after I called her out on social media for her involvement in the destruction of personal property.  But, the complaint wasn't about my social media outburst, it was a series of fabricated tales and read as a 'how to manipulate the system to procure a restraining order.'  Restraining orders are the easiest way for any woman to 'manipulate the system' for their own interest to gain control and power.  The sad thing is that the 'truth' doesn't matter- all that is required is a LIE.  The police by law then have to investigate, and when you add a celebrity that will undoubtedly receive public attention (it doesn't hurt to have the story leaked from the precinct to Daily News- for a nominal fee of course!)

 3. Sergeant Kevin Blake

Picture
Sergeant Kevin Blake of the NYPD 6th Precinct testified in court June 15, 2016 that he witnessed John Rinaldi walking down 10th St. which resulted in a stalking charge. The first report read that John was seen walking down 10th St. and briefly paused. After ridiculed by counsel in court, for holding 'no-weight' the report was then re-written to state that John was walking up and down 10th St. (implying up and down/ back and forth in front of a famous resident on 10th St.)

I may have paused, and had at the time every right to walk anywhere in the city I chose.
After being called out for perjury on social media, Kevin Blake stalked John Rinaldi on January 12, 2016 from 6 to after 11pm in an unmarked Chevy Tahoe which is seen on video footage and also on surveillance punching in my car window, punching in a rear quarter panel, booting my car and then smashing the windshield.

4.  Inspector Cokkinos

Picture
Retiring 6th Precinct Commanding Officer Hailed as 'Hero' to Women in the NYPD.

She may have been a hero, but she also built a case not on actual evidence but from evidence found on line in an online consumer protection/extortion site called Ripoff Report.  Ms. Cokkinos had she done her job properly there would never have been a case.  Had Ms. Shields not been a celebrity there would never had been the desire to fabricate one.

It's my allegation that Inspector Cokkinos violated her code of conduct to participate in a high-profile case.  In doing so, she over-saw the breaking of justice and unlawfully charged Mr. Rinaldi, despite being given evidence that proved his innocence.

She is no hero.

5. ADA Angelica Gregory

Picture

Ms. Gregory left the Manhattan DA's office after she was heard saying that she 'was tired of putting innocent people in jail.'
Being one of those innocent people, I then have to ask.. 'if you don't want to wrongfully convict, then don't suborn perjury for a win.'

Subornation of Perjury The criminal offense of procuring another to commit perjury, which is the crime of lying, in a material matter, while under oath.

Anjelica is now a litigation associate in the New York office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Prior to joining Kirkland, Anjelica spent three years prosecuting misdemeanors and felonies at the New York County District Attorney’s Office. (2013–2016).

Ms. Angelica Gregory has several complaints against her filed with the NY Grand Jury, the DA's Office, and the NY Attorney General.
The AG has stated that this type of 'abuse of power happens all too often.'

7. Manhattan DA's Office

Picture

The New York County District Attorney’s Office has a long tradition of excellence and non-partisanship, and is considered one of the nation’s preeminent prosecutor’s offices. Since the 1930s, there have been just four elected District Attorneys, and each has had a significant impact on modern criminal prosecution.

From a former ADA, we were advised to not accept any plea based on our innocents. That said, we were also advised to not fight an upward battle given the fight was against a presumptive and rather famous individual. We were also told we would never get a fair proceeding given the celebrity factor, but we had more faith in DA Cy Vance than our government official. We also believe that those involved should be ashamed for their criminal involvement that cohesively involves abuse of power from the original complainant , to an unwitting judge.

The bottom line is that the prosecution in it's attempt to convict made such a mockery of the entire judicial system, and did so with such blatant disregard given their contradictions of provided 'so-called evidence' and what was said in court. In doing so proved perjury and suborn perjury based on their own evidence provided.

9. Daniel Stern, Jonathan Stombely Esq.

Picture
Daniel Stern/ 'for a year and a half I was not defended.  And had only met with Mr. Stern possibly 3x in all- all recorded.  After being told I was guilty, I then replaced Mr. Stern for Jon Stombely.  Mr. Stombely was also incompetent.

After 4 days of testimony, and hearing the ludicrous tall tales told, I took notes and objected to all the abhorrent fabrications.   I even had collaborative proof of perjury and was still denied a proper defense.

Scheduled witnesses on my behalf were a Sandy Hook mom, a Sandy Hook dad, fellow volunteers from the Sandy Hook memorial, and several people I've lived and friends from high-school to current.  We even offered computer forensics that also held weight and offered credible proof of perjury.

The judge wanted to 'wrap-up' the case and denied an ample defense.  The judge even mentioned in court that he had wished all defense attorneys and prosecutors 'got along so well.'  I'll say, they were in collusion- they had to be.  The perjury was so evident, and had I a reputable defense, they would have lost.

10. Chris Henchy

Picture

Brooke Shields’ husband weeps on the stand at her stalker’s trial
No, he committed perjury.  In discovery, Ms. Shields' paid-for security detail, provided a 'Confidential' report on me.  In this report, from the prosecution, it completely reads as I've said all along- I was innocent.   However, Mr. Henchy stated otherwise in court...   He contradicted his 'paid-for' security, thus committed perjury.

On their behalf, I can only imagine what life must be like for a celebrity- I've seen it first hand and its awful- everyone pulling at you..   But, you cannot lie in court!  Hell, you were the one to introduce me to Brooke again in 2003.   You were the one to tell me not to worry about Brooke, and according to your facts told me not to stay away, but to 'have a nice day.'

Kevin McGrath is a judge of the New York City Criminal Court of New York County, New York. He was originally appointed an interim judge of the New York City Civil Court in September of 2008 and was reappointed to a full term in 2009. They lied to you Sir.  Despite my objections, I had wanted the case continued for Monday when we had a Sandy Hook mom, a Sandy Hook dad, The Sandy Hook CenTer COO, a Sandy Hook Memorial volunteer, and computer forensics that proved my innocence.

I thank you for your time, and I appreciate you taking time form your vacation to facilitate, but Sir ADA Angelica Gregory suborned perjury , both Ms. Shields and Mr. Henchy perjured theirselves, and I believe in doing so, displayed arrogance and a great disrespect to you and the entire judicial system.

12. Ryker's

Picture
After being wrongfully convicted, and then being sent to the infamous Ryker's Island, based on appeal the judge released me in just 7 days.  However, Ryker's wouldn't release me and illegally held me an addition 21 days- they steal from in-mates accounts...

13. Dr. Phil

Picture
On set, Dr. Phil told me I was a good guy and who clearly had no intent to harass anyone...

I reached out to the show out of desperation, having just lost my baby sister.   I proposed a story about PTSD/Trauma associated with loss after a loved one.   In a sense I was blind-sided...  But, after I told my story regarding Brooke they were quick to offer me an outlet to share my story, and they listened.  Prior to the show, no one had...

My family and my friends knew me well enough to know the allegations were ludicrous, but after more than 2years in preparing for the case- no defense was ever given.  And I blame myself.

I had a $50,000 attorney which I wasn't going to buy.  Why would/should I if there wasn't any merit.  But, that's our legal system- our judicial system is for sale.  And I was a fool to believe that justice would prevail...

I came to the show to be the example to our kids- we cannot control what is said about us, and no matter how bad it may seem there is always a way out.

I was wrong.  Sometimes there isn't.

We as adults have life skills that should arm us with life experience that should prevent us from being defined by someone's lies.  We as adults should have a skill-set that would disavow a bullying experience and therefore not allow it's entrampments.

I AM CLEARLY WRONG.

However, I have one thing that Hannah did not have.  I have HOPE...  and the truth.

The bullying/ extortion site Rip-Off Report was the beginning of my fate, but it is clearly NOT my end.

In my very public and high profile case against 80's famed Brooke Shields, I am very confident that justice will prevail and I hope that my going public will serve as an example to all bullied on-line who believe suicide is an option.

It is not.

It's also my intent to serve as an example to all those in search of hope or in Hannah's case...  hope isn't found in another- it's you.  You are your own hope and kindness exists.  Had a stranger not been kind to this then 15 year old self, I'd have never found my courage to endure.

But, we all have our breaking point....   and so begins my 'side' 14...  aka MY Bonus.

HypervigilanceFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaHypervigilance is an enhanced state of sensory sensitivity accompanied by an exaggerated intensity of behaviors whose purpose is to detect activity. Hypervigilance may bring about a state of increased anxiety which can cause exhaustion. Other symptoms include: abnormally increased arousal, a high responsiveness to stimuli, and a constant scanning of the environment.[1]
In hypervigilance, there is a perpetual scanning of the environment to search for sights, sounds, people, behaviors, smells, or anything else that is reminiscent of activity, threat or trauma. The individual is placed on high alert in order to be certain danger is not near. Hypervigilance can lead to a variety of obsessive behavior patterns, as well as producing difficulties with social interaction and relationships.
Hypervigilance can be a symptom of post traumatic stress disorder[2] (PTSD) and various types of anxiety disorders. It is distinguished from paranoia. Paranoid diagnosises, such as the one in schizophrenia, can seem superficially similar, but are characteristically different.
Hypervigilance is differentiated from dysphoric hyperarousal in that the person remains cogent and aware of their surroundings. In dysphoric hyperarousal, the PTSD victim may lose contact with reality and re-experience the traumatic event verbatim. Where there have been multiple traumas, a person may become hypervigilant and suffer severe anxiety attacks intense enough to induce a delusional state where the effects of related traumas overlap. This can result in the thousand-yard stare.
Symptoms[edit]People suffering from hypervigilance may become preoccupied with scanning their environment for possible threats, causing them to lose connections with their family and friends. They might 'overreact' to loud and unexpected noises or become agitated in highly crowded or noisy environments. They will often have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep.[3] Sustained states of hypervigilance, lasting for a decade or more, leads to higher sensitivity to disturbances in their local environment, and an inability to tolerate very small or large groups. After resolution of the situation demanding their attention, people are exhausted and are often unable to function in normal society.
