John - You have probably read the headlines, but I wanted to share the news with you directly: New York City will close the Rikers Island jail. This is going to take a lot of work, many years, and a number of tough decisions along the way, but it will happen. So I want to explain to you in a bit more detail the steps we must take to get there, and then I am going to ask you to add your name on a petition supporting this plan. Closing Rikers must start with lowering the jail population overall. That is job one. Twenty years ago, there were more than 20,000 people in our jails. Today we have less than half that number, and crime is down to historic lows. But to close Rikers, we have to get the number of people in our jail systems below 5,000 individuals. The neighborhood policing model that has driven down crime to record lows is an absolutely essential piece of the puzzle. Alternative sentencing and bail reform are others. But we must also reduce recidivism in New York City. That is why every inmate will get education, training, and re-entry planning from the day they arrive on Rikers. And our “Jails to Jobs” program guarantees anyone who is sentenced and serves time in our jail system will leave with a transitional job to help give them a chance to succeed. All of these pieces need to work to hit our goal. But I believe we can do it. Now I want to hear from you: Add your name if you agree with my decision to close down the Rikers Island jail facility in New York City. We are going to end the era of mass incarceration with this change, and I need to know you’re with me. The mass incarceration crisis did not begin in New York City, but by making this important change, it will end here. In solidarity, Bill de Blasio Mayor, New York City RESPONSE:John -
You: You have probably read the headlines, but I wanted to share the news with you directly: New York City will close the Rikers Island jail. Today we have less than half that number, and crime is down to historic lows. But to close Rikers, we have to get the number of people in our jail systems below 5,000 individuals. ME: ***Sir, 20 years ago you say there were more than 20,000 people in 'our' jails. And today it's less than half, and you want to reduce it further to below 5,000. I was wrongfully convicted on June 17, 2016 as a result of 1. Four false police reports were filed based on perjured testimony of: Brooke Shields, and a then Sergeant Blake, 2. Police and prosecutorial misconduct that resulted in ACTUAL CRIMES COMMITTED, and 4. My being denied basic human rights in the form of not only inadequate council but unethical council. Legal Aid MUST ALSO BE CLOSED, as it hardly represents a fair or just council. So, before we start Grand-standing over the demise of Rykers. We must first understand the basic criminalities, and it's NOT only by those incarcerated. But, those we actually look to for justice! YOU: The neighborhood policing model that has driven down crime to record lows is an absolutely essential piece of the puzzle. Alternative sentencing and bail reform are others. ME: But, 'the neighborhood policing policies' that are supposedly driving down crime, are NOT the essential piece. It's not when you have the 6th Precinct on surveillance camera stalking innocent citizens, and when no one is looking assault them! Guess what detective, some one was looking. I have personal video footage, physical evidence, and surveillance video showing/ witnessing YOUR assault Sergeant Blake. YOU: But we must also reduce recidivism in New York City. That is why every inmate will get education, training, and re-entry planning from the day they arrive on Rikers. And our “Jails to Jobs” program guarantees anyone who is sentenced and serves time in our jail system will leave with a transitional job to help give them a chance to succeed. ME: Great. But, while at Rykers' can you stop the 'White' prejudices, and can you have Rykers' stop stealing from in-mates financial accounts? YOU: All of these pieces need to work to hit our goal. But I believe we can do it. Now I want to hear from you: Add your name if you agree with my decision to close down the Rikers Island jail facility in New York City. Rinaldi Resident of New York City (well, I was until Police Misconduct that has bullied and harassed my leave. I honestly don't trust the 6th Precinct after the 1. Fabricated/ perjured testimony that led to ADA subornation of perjury which led to a wrongful conviction, and 2. Police Assault on more than one occasion- 2 on camera and with physical evidence.
